1. Jamua : This is a far flung village in Giridih district of Indian state Jharkhand.Once I got chance to go there. I was attending a marriage ceremony of one of my friends. We went to buy saree from a shop at Jamua. I was surprised to know that all sarees that they showed us was manufactured from Surat. Each saree was labeled like Surat NTM market. Abhisek Market Surat etc.
2. Jaipur : In Jaipur there live my aunty. I also went there. Once I went to a saree shop with my aunty I was also surporsed to see that every saree has labled as Surat Gomti Market, Golwala Market Surat.
3. Kolkata : Apart from Surat we also have an office in Kolkata. Though Kolkata has been center of saree and Kolkata also has been saree manufacturing places from ages. But when I went to a shop to buy saree for my mom, I came saw most of the saree was labled as Surat saree. From high profile shop to smaller shop, you can see the silk city’s manufactured Sari.

4. Gangtok : From Kolkata I also got a chance to go to Gangtok, Sikkim’s Capital. I also found many shops having saree but the saree was manufactured from Surat.

5. Hydrabad : And in yet another big city of India, Hyderabad. I went there for some business purpose. Also I tried to purchase few sarees from a shop but there too! Surat manufactured sari. Though there were saris from south Indian manufactured but, surat saree was also there.

Surat Textile Industry will construct rest houses for it’s buyers

Good news for traders from foreign countries as well as India’s on states like Delhi, Kolkata, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab who comes regularly to the city to buy clothes, sarees and other ready fabrics for their business to sell in their own states. If everything is at its place, the traders commuting from their home state and Surat will not have to face problem to stay while they make purchases in textile markets. Federation of Surat Textile Traders Association (FOSTTA) has chalked out a plan to provide accommodation facilities in the rest houses.

FOSTTA chairperson is mulling to provide the trades who comes Surat to buy textile related products accommodation near textile markets located on Ring Road. The textile Association has also contacted to Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) for furnishing reserved plots in the textile market areas for building rest houses.

There are numerous buyers from severable parts of India and abroad frequent the textile markets for buying popular Saris, dress material and other finished fabrics in wholesale quantities. Main season for cloth sell is from October on ward, because in India festive season starts in this season. But, most of the city are already booked the traders have no other choice but to return due to lack of accommodation facilities. In this month because of large numbers of guests, hotels room’s tariffs are also increased which become almost un affordable for them.

Devkishan Manghani, secretary, FOSTTA says , "Lack of accommodation facilities is the big issue for the outstation buyers visiting the city. The civic body has some reserved plots in the market areas, which could further be utilized for constructing rest houses,"

Manghani futher added, ”there are more than 55,000 textile traders operating from the 140 textile markets located in Ring Road and Salabatpura areas. The daily turnover at these markets is anything between Rs100 crore and Rs120 crore. However, FOSTTA is expecting to collect huge amount of donations from the textile traders for setting up rest house facilities for the outstation buyers.’

According to insiders, FOSTTA members are thinking to collect Rs10 to Rs15 crore from the textile traders. The rest house facilities would be provided to the buyers on cheap tariffs.
This will be a kind of unique thing for Surat, because where at one place Hotel owner will not be happy by listening this, buyers of Surat Textile market will be very happy to learn about this.

Surat Textile to be affected by gas supply cut by Gujarat Gas

Surat Textile industry, which is already reeling under economic crisis, Gujarat Gas has added woes by announcing to cut in its supply . Since Gas is one of the important component for textile manufacture, it will affect the industry badly by this decision. But Gujarat Gas has taken this decision to lower the supply to the textile units after the supplier company decided to cut the supply. The Gas Company has decided to cut the supply to 66 per cent of the daily contracted quantity (DCQ).
According to sources , “The gas supply by Gas Authority of India (GAIL) to Gujarat Gas has been brought down to around 40 per cent,”. GAIL (Gas Authority of India) provides 2.1 million cubic meter of gas to Gujarat Gas .
This is not the first time this has been done. Such supply cut decision was already taken and Surat Textile Industry had to bear the brunt. Before this, Gujarat Gas had curtailed the supplies to 72 per cent of DCQ in February. “Due to further reduction in the supply from our gas supplier(s), gas supply to your unit is reduced ...under the GSA (Gas Supply Agreement) with effect from 9 March 2009 to 66 per cent of the DCQ till further notice,” reads a letter sent by Gujarat Gas to a textile unit, which buys gas from the company.
More than 300 textile units which are dependent on Gas supply are bound to be affected badly by this decision . Gujarat Gas has an agreement with Surat Textile units to provide 8 lakh cubic meter gas daily. “At present, only 66 per cent of the contracted quantity is being supplied,” said the owner of a textile unit in Surat.
“In case where gas supply in excess of 66 per cent is required, the units have been asked to pay Rs 25 per cubic meter gas. At present, the textile units are charged Rs 11.50 per cubic meter gas. In a way, the company has doubled the prices of gas,” said Pramod Chaudhary, president of South Gujarat Textile Processors’ Association.
One upset textile unit owner says. “If we don’t get required gas, many units will have to be closed down. We stand to incur huge financial losses and things will further worsen as the textile industry is passing through a tough time,”

Textile Industry crisis bailout packege not enough : says expert

Recently Government announced revival package to bail out textile industry reeling under world economic meltdown. But expert in this field says that revival package for the textile industry that the government announced will lessen burden of capital flows but not spur production and employment growth, industry representatives said.
The Union government has allocated some Rs1,400 crore to clear a backlog in its Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (Tufs), aimed at modernizing textile machinery.

Through the scheme, the government reimburses 5% of the interest on bank loans. However, dues are pending since September last year.
The recent allocation, according to the Confederation of the Indian Textile Industry (Citi), an industry lobby with at least 500 associations as members, will help meet only pending dues for the first two quarters of this financial year that began in April.
“The money due to the industry has been provided finally, but it’s not a relief,” said B.K. Patodia, chairman and managing director of the Rs400 crore GTN Group, one of the country’s big cotton yarn exporters.
The $52 billion (Rs2.5 trillion) industry has been impacted on slowing global consumption and cash flow problems at home. Small and medium enterprises comprise 80% of the sector.
Patodia said if the government wants to restore confidence, it would need to reinstate the interest subsidy, also known as subvention, to the pre-October level of 4%.
The subsidy scheme, meant for pre- and post-shipment credit, ended on 1 October. The latest package has, however, restored it by half the original rate at 2%.
As a direct fallout of lower production and cancelled export orders, the textile industry—that employs some 35 million, the largest after agriculture—has hugely laid off temporary workers. Citi estimates such job losses number between 700,000 and 500,000.
The retrenchment figure, said Citi director general D.K Nair, has been calculated on lower output forecasts for the year. Production is likely to fall by 5% this year, he said.

PM calls meeting to bail out Textile Industry

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has convened a meeting on Wednesday on bailing out the textile industry following the surge in input costs due to a sharp hike in the minimum support price of cotton in September.
"The prime minister has called a meeting on the request of the textile ministry. I don't know much about the details. But I hope that something will be worked out for the industry," Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said on the sidelines of the International Potato Conference, adding that he would attend the meeting.
The Centre has increased the MSP of standard cotton (long staple) to Rs 3,000 per quintal for 2008-09 from Rs 2,030 in the previous year. The MSP of medium staple cotton has been raised to Rs 2,500 from Rs 1,800 per quintal.
Pawar said the government will intervene in the market when prices go below MSP. "Our policy is whenever market price goes below MSP, the government must intervene."
The industry has protested strongly against the MSP hike, saying domestic rates will skyrocket at a time when prices in global markets are declining.
The Confederation of Indian Textile Industry has cautioned that the hike in MSP will prompt domestic traders and millers to import cheaper cotton and exports may plunge by a half to about 50 lakh (5 million) bales (one bale is equal to 170 kg) in 2008-09 from 1 crore (10 million) bales last year.
India is projected to produce at least 3.20 crore (Rs 32 million) bales of cotton in the 2008-09 season.

Deadly virus swine flu took another life in Surat on Monday
After this the death toll occurred due to swine flue in Surat has reached up to five. And if total number of death is counted through the Gujarat, it reached 18.3 more swine flue infected peoples where admitted in New Civil Hospital.
Vinod upadya, a 40 year old man from Pandesra area of Surat was lates victim of this worl wide deadly virus. He was kept in isolation ward because this is one of the most contagious diseases.
The diseased blood culture was sent for test to BJ Medical College, was found that he had swine flue infected. Initially Mr Upadhyay complained of cough and common cold. Local treatment was given but when this intensified he had to admit in new Civil Hospital on 10th of September. According to doctors all effort were made to save him but none of the treatment was effective and he died.
We have quarantined his family members and have asked them to undergo the complete treatment course,'' hospital superintendent
MK Wadhel said. He added that how Upadhyay got
infected with the virus was still unknown.
Meanwhile, another man identified as Ajay Choudhry, 30, a resident of Salya village in Mandvi taluka, died at the New Civil Hospital on Monday. Ajay was studying at ITI at Majura gate. He had been admitted to the hospital late on Sunday night.
Ajay was having swine flu-like symptoms and for that the doctors had sent his blood samples to BJ Medical College for testing. Ajay died before his report could arrive. Also on Monday, three more suspected cases were admitted to the isolation ward of the hospital.

A recent study carried out by future capital Research (RFC) and National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCER) puts Surat on No.1 Spot among 20 other growing cities having youths below 35 years. KK Sharma, executive director, Indian Diamond Institute (IDI),said:"It is due to the presence of young work force in the industry that Surat is known all over world for its small-sized stones, which even the Chinese have failed to master: While workers in other sectors are allowed to work even after crossing 45 years in the diamond industry retirement is at 40 years."

If there is no young eyes polishing of stones is impossible. Around 60 pre cent of Diamond workers are young. Generally in the case of solitaires, people with 15 to 20 years of work experience are required.

More than 18 live bombs found in Surat.

After gruesome killing by bomb blast in Ahmedabad, it seems Surat, Guajrat’s industrial hub was next target of terrorist. More than 18 bombs were found in Surat so far from different part of the city. It is horrible that most of the bombs were in densely populated are. Apart from this police also found two cars with explosive loaded materials. Most of the bomb was found by local citizen and informed the police about this. It is fortunate that all bombs were defused before it could cause havoc to the city.

First car loaded bomb making materials was discovered on Sunday on Punagam area of Surat. Most incident take place outside textile market where tempos laden with grey and other finished fabric are parked .The gang operators in around 140 textiles market housing around 45,000 textile shops locked on the ring road Sahara Darwaja and salabatpura area A bundle of gray cloth costs anything between Rs 1’000 to Rs 1,200 while the bundle of finished fabric including dress material and embroidered fabric cost between Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000.

Textile traders said such incident have gone up after the Diwali festival There are cases wherein the miscreants have escaped with gray cloth and finished fabrics from inside the shop at night by using duplicate keys. Federation of Surat Textiles Association’s (FOSTTA) crime wing chairman,Sanjay Jagnani said the traders are faced with deferent set of problem. They have to bring the stocks at their shop and this is the time when the miscreants strike.

A branch flyover of 398 m will connect the main flyover from Ghod Dod Road jatin shah, Executive engineer said,"The branch flyover connecying the main flyover will be a single lane bridge meant for the entry of vehicular traffic going towards Gaurav path. the flyove is likely to be completed within 18 months." Surat got six flyover in the last one decade. one at Parle point is now under construction while six others are in the pipeline. the Varachha flyover is claimed to be india's longest flyover in four-lane category. That 2.75-km-long flyover, built at s cost of Rs 29.40 crore by SMC in 2003, helped reduce travel time for all those entering the city from Nh-8.The multi-layered flyover recently constructed at a cost of Rs 35 crore at MAjura Gate has helped connect Bhatar with railway station via Udhna. in the last few years, the populastion has grown phenomenally and reached 40 lakh.The number of registered vehicles has gone up to 15 lakh. the network of flyovers has become a necessity for the coity to keep pace with urban growth, according to corporation officials

Hardly there are any Indian women who do not know about Surat Saree. Because of its designer sarees and being cheaper than other places, surat is called ground of sarees. But recently this Industry ha been beset by several problems, and particularly recent economic slowdown. The Surti sari may get a bit cheaper this time . With stocks piling up, sari traders in the synthetic textile hub of Surat have started offering huge discounts, about 20 per cent to 30 per cent, to buyers across the country.

Ketan Desai, owner of Surat saree, closed an order of 5 lakh worth of saris for Rs 3 lakh after negotiations with a Delhi-based buyer . "The stock was two month old . Had I not giveen him the discount. I would have had to sell it off at a much lower price later, " he said. Lohia said the wholesale price of the sari stock he sold to Delhi-based buyer ranges between Rs250and Rs 600-somthing that would have cost him Rs 450 to Rs 850 two months ago.

There are hundreds of sari traders who have been offering heavy discounts to buyers in order designs and patterns keeps on changing very fast and the colors are not assorted.

According to Devkishan Manghani secretary Federation of Surat Textile Traders Association (FOSTTA), the textile industry in the city manufactures sarees worth Rs 9,000 crore and Rs 11,000 crore per annum. There is no other way but, to clear stockpile before it becomes outdated.

"This years traders have been facing around 30 to 40 per cent losses with a slack Diwali and marriage season. Losses are pegged at Rs 5,000 crore to Rs 6,000 crore Sarees worth Rs 7,000 crore to Rs 8.000 crore are piled up in the god owns of the textile traders," said Mangham. The man -made fabric industry in the city is equipped with over six lakh power-looms that manufactures around there crore meters of fabric per day. Around 400 dyeing and processing units each one having the capacity to process around 20 million linier meters of fabric per annum, produces fabric and sarees in the country. The annual export of sarees and dress material is pegged at Rs 1,200 crore, while the supply in the domestic market ranges between Rs 18,000and 22,000 crore per annum.

A recent report by the leading credit rating agency, ICRA, revealled that sari , as a category , has clocked an impressive 8.8 per cent annual growth in valuators - the growth of other textile categories like suiting shirting, ready-made garments etc. has declined - between 1998 and 2006 to become a Rs 53.469 corore market. "Around 70 per cent of the sarees market in the country is catered by the traders and dealers in Surat," Said Arum jariwala. Chairman. Federation of Indian Art Silk Weaving Industry(FIASWI).

After announcement of 20% fees hike in diamond business. Diamond workers thought they are going to get this salary hike but , whe they saw their diamond workers not enacting this announce agitated diamond workers took to the city streets on Tuesday and pelted stones at diamond factories located across varachha, AK Road and katargam areas of the city. The owners earned the ire of the workers after they refused to hike their wages as proposed by the Surat Diamond Association (SDA) on Monday. The riot scared many unit owners into closing their shops.
On Monday, office bearers of the SDA, had announced that the wages of diamond cutters and polishers in the industry will be hiked by 20 per cent with affect from July 1 this year.
But, many manufacturers who had already hiked wages by 10-15 per cent in 2007, refused to abide by the decision. The workers hence took to the streets and vandalized units in Kapodra , Varachha and Katargam forcing many units to shut shop.
According to sources, in places like Matawadi, Kohinoor society, Mangalchowk, AK Road, Nana Varachha, Bombay colony, Mohannagar and Vrindavan society, heavy stone-pelting resulted in external damage to the small and medium size manufacturing units. But, surprisingly none of the manufacturers filed complaints.
Kapodra police officials said, some workers targeted units located at Baroda Prestige, Kapodra cross roads, Rachna society and Siddhkutir as targets whereas Katargam police stated that a mob went with specific intention to vandalize a unit located at Nandu Joshivadi. However, for reasons unknown they refrained at the last moment.
Meanwhile, SDA office-bearers through an official communiqué asked all workers to keep calm and maintain peace. It also warned of punitive action from police if they continued to damage property of manufacturers.

Surat saree, in spite of all odds, has registered steady growth. Every traders in Surat textile hopes that in the festive season they will earn good money. But this season it seems it is very difficult for them. But increase in price of crude oil has already ht the industry. And now this is major blow for this. Textile dyeing and processing units of Surat has decided to implementing a hike of 50 paisa in the processing of fabrics.

Textile traders says the industry is facing a 35-40 per cent hike across all product categories of synthetic textiles with the hike in input costs. While polyester prices have registered a 30 per cent hike in the last three months, price of dyestuff and other auxiliary items used in processing of grey fabrics including gas price have registered a phenomenal increase in the last few months.
It is hardly one month that textile processors had announced a 20 per cent hike in per metre charges for processing fabrics. The price hike had come in the wake of soaring crude oil prices and increasing costs of dyestuff and other chemicals used in processing of synthetic fabrics. “The industry is passing through a tough phase. There is no other way but to pass on the increasing input cost burden to textile traders,” said Pramod Chaudhary, president, South Gujarat Textile Processors’ Association (SGTPA).

Mahendra Tiwari a saree trader says, “The price hike by textile processors has come as a major blow to us ahead of the start of the festive season. Around 60 per cent of low-cost polyester sarees and dress materials are supplied to Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Punjab and Mumbai. Middle class consumers wearing the low-cost sarees would not be able to bear a hike of Rs.100.”

In the world's largest diamond cutting and polishing centre where around nine out of 12 diamonds mined globally are cut and polished , it is a known fact that if a worker is not young then he would not qualify for the job. Only young hands with precision to shape the glittering stones are preferred in the industry. Workers above 40 years have to take early retirement. "Around 90 per of the total 3,000 workers employed in my unit comprises youths The rest of the workers have been kept for polishing specialized stones called solitaires which require precision as well as years of experience.

A recent study carried out by future capital Research (RFC) and National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCER) puts Surat on No.1 Spot among 20 other growing cities having youths below 35 years. KK Sharma, executive director, Indian Diamond Institute (IDI), said: "It is due to the presence of young work force in the industry that Surat is known all over world for its small-sized stones, which even the Chinese have failed to master: While workers in other sectors are allowed to work even after crossing 45 years in the diamond industry retirement is at 40 years."

If there is no young eyes polishing of stones is impossible. Around 60 pre cent of Diamond workers are young. Generally in the case of solitaires, people with 15 to 20 years of work experience are required.

Students of BRCM Colleges of Surat conducted an opnion poll on different subjects ranging from Surat Traffic,quality of education in the city,Surat pollution, how Surat police functions etc.. And the result that was found was really startling and many new facts came into light during this poll.

Opinion poll was conducted by 450 student and involved a total of 700 man hours.

An event was organized to give details of this poll by BRCM College. “It was an attempt by the student as part of their studies and they managed to get a few interesting facts about the city. Such studies can help to understand the city better,” says Vipul Vyas, of BRCM.

In total , 1,100 people’s opinions were collated through a questionnaire. On traffic and parking sense of people in the city, 40 per cent of respondents opined that it is poor, 19 per cent believed that it is the worst, 28 per cent that it is average and only 12 per cent believe it is good.

The major part of respondents was in opinion that the functioning of the police and people’s security is average .44 per cent opined that the functioning of police is average, is 28 per cent believed that it is good and 20 per cent thought the functioning is poor.

The startling results were on Surti’s approach to post mortem organ donation, 54 percent people didn’t wish to donate, 28 percent were willing to donate their eyes and 18th percent were ready to donate their body.

As far as awareness of pollution is concerned due to Diwali 81 percent respondents agreed, 14 percent did not and 5percent refused to comment. Similarly categorizing kite flying as un safe for people and birds, 70 percent people believed it as a threat to people and birds both , 17 percent didn’t agree and 13 percent refused to comment.
